It is never easy to find the motivation to exercise, especially when you get out of the routine. Winter is here, accompanied by cold weather and darker days which are perfect conditions to allow yourself to be more creative with excuses. Skip a few gym days and you’d soon find yourself being a couch potato.
We talked to guys at World Gym Palm Desert to see if there’s any way to self-motivate and return to your regular exercise schedule, and the answer is yes.
Go easy on yourself
You can’t instantly return to your previous form and regain your previous strength quickly. What you need to do is start modestly and set smaller goals you feel you could achieve and then gradually increase over time. It is important to regain the sense of accomplishment in order to motivate yourself to go on, and the only way you can do that is to start small and then expand.
The best way to do this is mix things up and, for example, dedicate 30 minutes to cardio training by simply walking or jogging and thus increase your heart rate. Then you can switch to strength and exercise for about 20 minutes with your own weight, free-weights or machines in the gym.
After you’re done with all that, it is important to stretch out your body and allow muscles to loosen up, because you want to avoid aches after a long period of inactivity.
Try something different
Maybe one of the reasons you initially stopped exercising was due to feeling burned out by your previous routine. That is perfectly normal and expected, and the way to combat that is to introduce new and different exercises you’ve never tried before.
You need to keep things interesting at all times. Set a goal to try more different machines for both cardio and strength and as soon as it gets monotonous mix things up. Eventually, you’d always be able to find an alternative to your current routine, which is a good boredom killer.
Find a gym buddy
It is very easy to find an excuse for whatever you need to do, but if you find a companion with similar goals, you two could become the best motivators to each other. There’s always this competitiveness present, even if you don’t care about it, which is probably the best way to motivate yourself and your buddy to grow.
You can even do exercises which require two people and make your day at the gym even more fun. Knowing that you are not just responsible for yourself, but your friend as well will surely keep you going.
Introduce a healthier diet
It is not easy to just switch to a different diet all of a sudden and rid yourself of all the yummy treats. You just need to keep things in moderation and make room for fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates and proteins. Diet is the key to any successful gym regime, so start with healthier food, achievable goals, and a gym buddy and before you notice, you will be back in your desired form.
I know it sounds easier said than done, but following the steps mentioned above is a sure path to your previous strength and future growth as many Palm Desert personal trainers advise. Even if you break the habit again, you have these simple steps to follow.
