Anxiety is a normal life experience. Moreover it has a biological function to alarm our bodies in times of danger. The extra adrenaline that comes as a response of the alert can be useful in situations where we are dealing with actual danger, however it could be very unpleasant in times when we are stressing over work, upcoming stager performance or going to a party.

Our nervous system has a defense mechanism called” the fight or flight response”. When our brain signals the nervous system that there may be a possible threat, the fight or flight response activates, causing secretion of many hormones in the body. Moreover, as mentioned before, adrenaline is just one of them, and their function is to help the individual defend and survive.

Living in this modern world, our nervous system is faced with life threatening situations every day, or at least this is how they are perceived by our brain. Our brain cannot differentiate the fear and stress caused by a deadline at work or an actual life threatening attack. Therefore, when you are seriously stressing over something, your body prepares you for a fight or flight which causes major changes in the body: increased heart rate, shaking, heavy breathing, sweating, reduced digestion etc.

Prolonged states of stress, cause our nervous system to get out of balance and this is where we start to experience the so called anxiety state. The word anxiety is very commonly used these days and to describe many psychological reactions. However, anxiety should be use to describe the anxiety state caused by prolonged stress and nervousness and the anxiety disorder categorized as psychological illness.

Face the change

When anxiety kicks in many people are very confused and unaware of what is happening. Anxiety often results with panic attacks that can be very severe and a person may perceive this as a heart attack and dying experience.

Although, it is advisable to seek professional help, some people feel comfortable talking to a very close friend or a family member.  A therapist will help you find the causes and assist you in resolving the problem. However, having a close friend or family member that understands you, may also help you with healing. The feeling of acceptance and love, gives confidence and is proven to help releasing the stress. Therefore, a healthy relationship may have a positive impact on your psychological state and help you in your healing process.

Problems with anxiety should be taken seriously. Ignoring the problem or relying on medication will not provide a solution and the problem would not disappear by itself. As mentioned before these states should be cured and the healing process takes a lot of time and patient. Well, a problem that was building for a long period of time cannot be solved overnight.

And while healing may take a long period of time, it is important to take care of the symptoms of the anxiety as they may seriously interfere with your normal everyday life. Starting with the panic attacks, the insomnia, hypersensitivity, to fear of going out and doing simple everyday chores, anxiety can really influence the quality of a person’s life.
