Get Rid of a Perm

Whether you had your hair permed in the salon or maybe you just did it at home, there is indeed a high possibility that you will get too tight curls, unimpressive waves, or even a “fishtail” result with strands that hang loosely with the rest of your hair. You do not have to worry, though, if you are experiencing the above mentioned because below is a guide on how to get rid of a perm which had gone wrong.

Ways on How to Get Rid of a Perm

Here is a step by step guide on how to get rid of a perm just after you had your hair permed:

  1. Wash your hair right away. Most of the perm formulas have 28 hours to neutralize, so hairdressers usually advise waiting for up to for 48 hours before you can shampoo. Make use of a Color Protecting Shampoo and Conditioner to hydrate and cleanse your hair if you want to get rid of a perm.
  2. Apply a hot oil treatment or deep conditioning, cover your hair with a shower cap, and leave it on for several hours. You can even leave it overnight on your hair if you want and just wash it out in the morning. Deep conditioning on over-processed hair will facilitate in loosening the tight curls and at the same time tame the frizz.
  3. If you just have a few tiny bits of fishtail that stick out of from your curls, carefully trim them out. Rather than using the common household scissors, you will have the best results when you use hair shears instead. If that is too hard for you, curling iron or a blow dryer can also be used to style your hair the way you want to have it. Make sure that your hair is protected by styling products to prevent further damage from the extra heat and exposure.
  4. If none of these methods work, or if your perm has been far too long, you just might have to be patient and just let it grow out.

However, if you do not have the patience then there are other tips and tricks on how to get rid of a perm when it has been too long.

Use of Professional Treatments

  • Use a conditioner.

Using a good strong conditioner is one of the most effective solutions on how to get rid of a perm. A conditioner will be able to hydrate your permed hair, decrease frizziness, and make the perm look a bit better.

  • Wet your hair and use a towel to dry it. Use a wide-tooth comb to apply the waving lotion or the perming solution to the wet hair. You can do this using a tub or sink.
  • If your hair is too long or you think you will miss any areas, get a friend to help you. You would like to be sure that the waving lotion will completely saturate your hair.
  • Continue to comb your hair with the waving lotion for at least 10 minutes. By then, you should start noticing that the curls had already relaxed and the hair is hanging straight. If that does not happen, keep on combing your hair with the waving lotion for 5 minutes more or until the curls relax.
  • Rinse out the waving lotion from your hair with warm water for about 3 minutes to make sure that you get all of the lotion out from your hair.
  • Use a towel to gently remove water from your hair, however, do not rub it as that will make it more frizzy.
  • Apply the neutralizer. Comb it thoroughly your hair for at least 5 minutes.
  • Rinse out the neutralizer with warm water for 5 minutes. Wrap up the rinsing with cool water since the cool water helps in closing the cuticle layer. Use conditioner to prevent tangles in your hair.
  • Use a towel to gently dry and remove any excess water, avoid rubbing it. Allow your hair to air dry or you can make use of a blow dryer with a diffuser.
  • Use waving lotion to straighten the perm.

Another way on how to get rid of a perm is to restyle the perm of your hair by straightening it, and then it is necessary to deeply condition your hair first before exposing your hair with more heat. You have to do this the day before you plan on straightening out your hair. Additionally, you must condition your hair every day for it to regain its moisture and reclose your hair’s important cuticle layer.

  • Ask your hairstylist to have your hair re permed or else get a new haircut.

Do not have your hair re permed just yet for a few weeks after the first perm, because you do not want to even further damage your hair.

You may also find another, more practical alternatives with your stylist on how to get rid of a perm: a shorter hair cut. A shorter hair cut might be the only thing which really will fix the bad perm as it makes it possible for you to totally eliminate the damaged hair.

Use of Natural Remedies

  • Canola Oil

Applying canola oil as hair treatment is one of the best natural alternatives or solution on how to get rid of a perm. Using this treatment should loosen the perm to make re-styling more manageable, although you may have to repeat the treatment for several weeks to see results if your perm is hard to deal with and does not relax after one treatment.

  • Organize your supplies: a canola oil bottle, a plastic wrap, a towel, a gentle shampoo, a conditioner, a blow dryer, and styling shears.
  • Place your head over a washbasin, sink or tub, and apply ample amount of canola oil to soak your hair completely from the roots up to the tip.
  • Use the plastic wrap or plastic bag to wrap your hair. Afterward, wrap the plastic with a towel to avoid any oil from seeping out of your hair.
  • Leave it on for one to two hours. Thoroughly rinse off the oil from your hair using a gentle shampoo to loosen the oil off.
  • Make sure that you would not forget to lather your hair with a conditioner and let it sit for 2 minutes, then repeat as necessary until all the oil has gone.
  • Coconut Oil

Make a mask of coconut oil – this is also a very effective solution on how to get rid of a perm. Coconut oil is one of the only oils that will absorb into the hair shaft, as opposed to just coating it. It will also effectively condition, moisturize, and repair damaged hair from the inside out.

  • Spread a light coating of coconut oil on your scalp and hair. Do the scalp massage for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a comb to evenly spread out the coconut oil to the strands of your hair. Cover the hair for an hour with a towel. Remove the towel and continue to comb your hair. Rinse it off with warm water. Do this for up to a week, once a day.
  • Trim it out

Most of the bad perms are the effect of misusing of the perm rod. You hair may not wind correctly around the rod if you have a straight or coarse hair. This might lead for your hair to have fishtails at the tip of your hair. With a little perseverance and a couple of styling shears, you will able to fix the fishtail.

You have to make sure that you only cut on the straight portion of the hair when cutting the tip of the fishtail, because you do not want the cut to mess-up with the pattern of curl at all.

You should trim the fishtailed ends of your hair for about three days after the perm to avoid further harm to your hair.

Minor trimming can be performed on your own at home, or your stylist can also cut the fishtailed ends for you.

Reasons for Having a Bad Perm

  1. If the tresses of your hair are not in top shape, this could be further damaged by a perm’s chemical process, causing your hair to look very dull and unhealthy.
  2. If your stylist did not necessarily allow the perm to process for the appropriate length of time, the hair would either get too curly (making it appear frizzy) or otherwise not curly enough with your hair having loose, limp waves.
  3. If your hair is resilient to chemicals or improperly curved around the perm rods, you may get bizarre ends (known as fishtails) that are sticking directly out of the rest of your hairstyle.

How to Prevent from Having a Bad Perm

  1. Healthy hair reacts best to any chemical and styling processes. Give your locks some love by using nourishing hair care regimen which is specifically intended for the type of hair that you have.
  2. Be clear of what you want. Various kinds of perms are available to produce distinct looks. Spiral perms produce seductive ringlets, whereas more natural-looking curls are created by perm rods. Bring photos of what kind of perm you want to have and discuss it first with your stylist.
