Hair Transplants

Premier League footballer Wayne Rooney has carved out a remarkable legacy since making his professional debut at just 16 years of age. But almost as memorable as Rooney’s performances in the Premier League are his struggles with alopecia. Rooney’s hair loss began to show almost as early as his sporting skills. Over the past decade or so, he has tried to reverse its effects through multiple hair restoration procedures. But why hasn’t one been enough? Will you require numerous hair transplants to restore your receding hairline or is Wayne Rooney a unique case? Let’s find out.

Rooney’s First Hair Transplant

Wayne Rooney underwent the first of what would become many hair transplants in the summer of 2011. Amidst swirling rumors, Rooney himself confirmed the hair transplant via social media. Taking to Twitter, he stated:

“Just to confirm to all my followers I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25 why not”

Despite a few frustrating punctuation errors, Rooney’s tweet served to reduce the stigma around hair transplants. In fact, his being so open about undergoing such a procedure resulted in a drastic increase in the number of British men visiting hair restoration clinics.

The Other Hair Transplants

Despite claiming to be “delighted” with the results of his original hair transplant, Rooney has since undergone a number of additional procedures. The exact number of hair transplants he has received since 2011 is difficult to determine. This confusion is largely owing to his suspected use of spray-on hair thickeners, which has made it a challenge for even hair restoration specialists to tell when the footballer’s thicker mane is the result of surgery or a cosmetic product. What we do know, however, is that Rooney has undergone more than two hair transplants and will likely be forced to either pay for several more or make his peace with going bald.

How Much Has He Spent?

Rooney underwent his first hair transplant at The Harley Street Clinic in London. A hair transplant in the United Kingdom can get pretty expensive, particularly if it is performed in a high-end surgery such as The Harley Street Clinic. Because we are unsure how many hair transplants Rooney has undergone, it’s impossible to say how much he has spent on restoring his hairline since 2011.

However, this article from The Sun places the number at a staggering £30,000. Thankfully, a hair transplant doesn’t have to cost this much. If you don’t have tens of thousands to spend on hair transplantation, we suggest traveling to Turkey. Turkey’s hair transplant clinics offer the same procedures as their Western counterparts for a fraction of the cost. Even follicular unit extraction (FUE), the most expensive method of hair restoration, can be secured in Turkey for less than $5000.

But Will I Have To Book Multiple Procedures?

The fact that Wayne Rooney has undergone multiple hair transplants and is still thinning on top may make you a little skeptical of such procedures. However, it is important to remember that Rooney is very much a special case. Considering he started exhibiting clear signs of hair loss in his early twenties, we can assume the footballer has high levels of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme responsible for hair loss. In the average male, 5-alpha reductase exists in minimal amounts and does not cause noticeable hair loss until around the age of 30. Its effects can usually be stunted via a single hair transplant. So unless you share Wayne Rooney’s predisposition to extreme balding, it’s very unlikely you’ll require more than one procedure.
